JOSHUA
Naam van de Bijbelstudie Duur MB
Why should we study Joshua? All Scripture is given ... and is profitable. It retains a balance, and is given to nourish our spiritual life. All through the book there are things for our learning. Members of the Body will be attacked as Israel was — one is spiritual, the other was ‘in the land’. Both were chosen.
In the days of Joshua, the Canaanite was in the land, but in the last chapter there was ‘no more the Canaanite’. The book of Joshua is the first of three, concerning Israel in the land, and is in three parts. Joshua 1:2 gives three points — Moses (law); arise (resurrection); pass over (v. 11 — within three days).

A principle was at work: ‘meddle not with them’. Compare with Ephesians where there are blessings, look out for foes. In the O.T. the Canaanites were usurping the true seed. In the N.T., evil powers are at work. Know who are foes and friends. Joshua 2: Not only had the evil seed to be removed, but Jordan to be crossed. Jericho was a stronghold, but construction in Rahab’s favour — house on the wall. Rahab confessed — ‘I know ... ‘therefore saved. (Women in Scripture did not contaminate the line — sin passed through the male). One Joshua spared the ancestor of the second Joshua. 37 min. 4,3 MB
A prayer of Moses. (1) Doctrine (wrath): (2) Practice (dwelling). Joshua 3:1-6, ‘after three days’. Precise instructions — first, ‘when ye see the ark ... ye shall remove’. When all were clean passed over, ‘take twelve men and twelve stones’ — to be a sign among you. When everything fmished, and all passed over, then the ark passed over. On that day the Lord magnified Joshua. (cf. ‘It is fmished’ on the cross). 43 min. 4,8 MB
Chapters 5-7. The approach to Jericho is prefaced by a vision (5:13-15), but the book must be taken as a whole. In it we see God’s representative. Chapter 6 — victory; Chapter 7 — defeat. Achan involved all the people, so they were defeated at Ai, by someone within, not without (2 Cor.). Precise instructions again, but AchanlAchor = troubler (6:18 & 7:25) did not obey. There is to be no trifling with God. Ephesians — armour: Galatians — someone troubling you: take note of troublers! 43 min. 4,9 MB
Joshua’s solemn exhortation. Promises were soon to be broken. In the history of the human race, there has been ‘no vacant possession’ - already occupied by the evil seed. Chapters 10 & 11: A miracle was performed at a man’s request. God is not limited. He can upset all the laws of nature when necessary. One intrusion demands another. The Son of God is the greatest miracle of all. Mercy is suggested by the cities of reftige. ‘And the land rested from war’. 45 min. 5,1 MB
