The traditional view which places Ezra chronologically before Nehemiah
makes us believe that the temple would be built before the city and its walls
were restored.  This is not only illogical, it is inconceivable in view of
the report of Hanani concerning the desolations (Neh. 1:3; 2:3).  If there
were already in Jerusalem 42,360 exiles who had returned to Jerusalem (Ezra
2:64), Nehemiah would not have limited his inquiry as to 'the Jews that had
escaped, which were left of the captivity' (Neh. 1:2) neither would he have
